Old Fashioned Christmas Crafts and Decorations

If you haven’t finished your Christmas preparation yet – here are some ideas for simple, old fashioned Christmas crafts and decorations.

Cranberry and Popcorn Chain

The materials needed for this chain are whole cranberries, popcorn, needle and thread. With the needle and thread, string the berries and popcorn to create an old fashioned Christmas garland to wrap around the tree. (Air popped popcorn is better because it is not oily. Also, waxed dental floss can be used instead of thread.)

Apple and Orange Garland

This is a variation of the above craft. Dry apple and orange slices like this: Cut the fruit into slices. Soak the apples in water with lemon juice to keep them from turning brown. Spread the fruit in single layers on a cookie sheet and bake them for 6 to 8 hours at 150 degrees. Turn them over halfway through the process to make sure they get properly dried. String the apple and orange garland along with the cranberry and popcorn chain. After Christmas, these can be hung outdoors for the animals or birds to eat.

Paper Chains

This is such a basic vintage craft that we sometimes forget about it. Cut strips of construction paper the same length and width. Alternate red, green, and white, or whatever colors you wish. Glue the ends in place to connect. Drape the chain around the tree, across doorways, or over windows. Another idea would be to cut strips from Christmas scrapbook paper instead of construction paper. Then you would have designs on the strips.

Cinnamon Ornaments

Mix 3/4 cup applesauce with one 4-ounce bottle of ground cinnamon. Make a stiff dough and roll it into a thin layer. Cut the dough with cookie cutters. Poke a hole in the ornament for the hanger. Allow ornaments to dry for a couple of days.

Make wreaths using grapevine or pine boughs. Place ribbon, pine cones and berries, or anything else you like to decorate.
